ACORN Training Coming Up !!

Hello Troop 110 families,

As rightly mentioned by Mission peak, Every Youth Deserves a Trained Leader! That being said, we encourage interested parents to take the ACORN training that's provided by the District every year.

Please read below for more details provided by the District. For the troop level leaders, S24 and S11 is encouraged.

We hope to see many adult leaders sign up for these wonderful training sessions.

Thanks

Kind regards,

Anu

Acorn is the nickname Mission Peak gives to the combination of a few courses highly recommended by National. These courses are required for Cubmasters, Assistant Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, and Assistant Scoutmasters. They are highly recommended for any and all Adults Leaders in Packs, Troops, & Crews.

1) S24 - Scoutmaster Position Specific Training (SMPST) introduces you to everything you need to know about running a Scouts BSA Troop, which is different from a Cub Scout Pack. In particular, you and your fellow adult leaders are now in more of a "mentor" position where your job is to help your youth members learn and practice leadership. While this training will not answer every single question you have, it is a great start.

2) S11 - Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS) gives adult leaders the practical knowledge they need to help Scouts to learn outdoor skills. The skills presented closely follow the Boy Scout Handbook and rank advancement requirements. All the skills from Tenderfoot to First Class are covered in this training. This is a required training course for all Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters. It is also encouraged for anyone who will be participating on campouts regularly to consider taking this class. The training is designed to help all adult leaders regardless of experience level feel comfortable performing and supervising these skills with youth.

3) C32 - Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is an introduction to the Cub Scout outdoor program for units interested in offering a camping component to their Pack activities. This training consists of an online prerequisite component, plus an in-person overnight camping experience that provides hands-on practical skills. BSA's Cub Scout level camping policies are taught along with the discovery of the necessary tools to help units conduct a successful camping experience. Completion of this course is mandatory for a MINIMUM OF ONE adult on a Pack overnighter.

These courses are taught over two weekends. The first weekend is in Fremont. The second weekend is "on the hill" out at Rancho Los Mochos (RLM) near Livermore.

1. Sat 4/30 8:00 am - 5:00 pm S24 SMPST may be taken as a stand alone course at Kennedy High School in Fremont. However, we recommend you combine it with the IOLS or BALOO

2. Sun 5/1 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. S11 IOLS & C32 BALOO begin with classroom work at the Fremont Elks Lodge.

3. Fri  5/13 - Sun 5/15 S11 IOLS & C32 BALOO finish with the outdoor portion at Rancho Los Mochos near Livermore.

Registration is open for all classes:

a) S24 SMPST - Early registration is $35.00. Registration after 4/15 is $45.00. Prerequisites: Youth Protection Training (taken since May 1, 2020). Register & Pay Online.
